The pastoral unit Sainte-Claire which includes the parishes of Arconciel, Bonnefontaine, Ependes, Marly, Praroman-le-Mouret and Treyvaux-Essert manages since many years schedule of celebrations on its website.
Since late 2010, the diocese of Fribourg offers an online platform for centralized management of masses of various parishes and pastoral units. This application provides various filters and search criteria and allows parishes to integrate the schedules on their site through an HTML iframe.
The pastoral unit Sainte-Claire naturally wanted to use this new platform, but wanted to keep the flexibility in formatting the schedule of future celebrations it had until then. However, access to pre-formatted data in an iframe prevented it from achieving this goal.
After verifying that access to raw data (either XML or iCalendar) was unavailable and was not planned either, Causal Sàrl started to develop a service that interfaces between the site of the diocese and the extension “cal” used on the site of the pastoral unit Sainte-Claire to show the calendars.
The service retrieves the schedule in HTML format and converts it into an iCalendar (ICS) feed which can then be interpreted by the cal extension as an external calendar (just as when referencing a Google calendar for example).
At the same time, missing information in the source HTML may be supplemented. This is typically the case with GPS coordinates of the various places of worship. Similarly, the types of celebrations are transformed and mapped onto categories used by the pastoral unit Sainte-Claire.
